The Fortune 500 is an annual list compiled and published by Fortune magazine that ranks the 500 largest corporations in the United States by total revenue for their fiscal years.
The list includes public companies, plus private companies for which revenues are publicly available. The Fortune 500 concept was created by Edgar P. Smith, the editor of Fortune, and the first list was published in 1955. The Fortune 500 is more commonly used than its subset the Fortune 100 or the superset Fortune 1000.
